Getting Started With Open Water Swimming Recap

1: Safety! Try and do a beach/open water safety course to learn how to plan your swims and read the weather conditions

2: Breathing. Practice in the bath at home! Breathe out when your face is in the water and in when you lift your head up.

3: Coaching. Try and have one or two open water swimming coaching sessions to try and establish if you have any problem areas or elements you need to work on.

4: Make it social! Go and find some people to swim with, join a group in your local area.

5: Safety again! Get yourself a tow float to make sure you’re visible in the water, make sure you tell people where you’re going and when you’ll be back.

Getting Started With Backpacking Recap

1: Make your first overnight trip an easy one! Aim for just one night and around 5 miles is a good starting hike, also don’t camp too far away from your car, it will give you peace of mind to know that you can get back there quickly if you need to.

2: Check the weather! Make sure your first overnight backpacking experience is a good one, check the weather and plan it for a nice weekend.

3: Consider investing in a GPS or spot locator. Although these kinds of devices are quite a big financial investment, if you’re serious about getting into backpacking they are well worth it for personal safety. Always tell someone you know and trust where you’re going, how long you expect to be hiking for, where your going to camp and roughly what time you expect to get home.

4: Practice using your gear before you hit the trail. If you can set up your tent in your garden or yard and sleep in it before you hit the trail you’ll feel far more confident and you’ll also know that your equipment is working properly allowing you peace of mind so you can just enjoy the hike!

5: Research your gear ahead of time. You don’t need the most expensive gear to get started but it’s a good idea to do a little research before starting to invest.
