Welcome to Belize, an idyllic but mysterious country that promises to steal your heart! Wild stretches of jungle melt into the azure Caribbean Sea here, making this one of the most biodiverse destinations in Central America (and part of the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor). Belize is also very culturally diverse, being home to the Maya, Garifuna, and Belizean Creole people, amongst many other ethnic groups. Even just writing about this awe-inspiring place makes me feel ready to pack my bags and grab my passport.

Belize just happens to be one of my favourite destinations here at Vegan Adventure Holidays. From healthy barrier reefs to friendly locals, every stretch of this wonderful country promises to fuel your wanderlust. To help you plan an epic trip, here are five bucket list experiences that all vegan travel lovers must have in Belize.

1: Snorkel Through Hol Chan Marine Reserve

Hol Chan Marine Reserve, just off the coast of Belize, is so abundant in marine life that every moment exploring it will lodge itself firmly in your mind forever! Snorkelling through this underwater playground will surely blow you away.

Marvel at the rainbow of coral lining the reef, observe brightly coloured fish to-ing and fro-ing, and keep your fins crossed for a shark or dolphin sighting! Don’t miss out on the chance to explore the Boca Ciega Blue Hole, a magical sight to behold both above and below the water’s surface.

Next it’s time for a well-deserved rum cocktail (or virgin pina colada mocktail), which is exactly what you’ll enjoy after a day of snorkelling on my  Belize trip!

2: Hike Through Mayflower Bocawina National Park

Lush green landscapes. Rugged waterfalls. Ancient Mayan temples. Awesome hikes. A cacophony of ca-cawing birds, screeching monkeys, and whizzing bats. Mayflower Bocawina National Park offers OMG moments with every step!

After hiking one of the many spectacular trails with a local guide and learning all about the flora and fauna on display, pull off your vegan hiking boots – it’s time for a cooling waterfall dip.

Adventurous vegan travellers, why not round off your trip with a heart-racing zip wire through the dense canopy? It’s not the speed that’ll get your heart going, but the sensory explosion of sights, sounds, and smells that’ll greet you!

3: Make Friends At The Community Baboon Sanctuary

The Community Baboon Sanctuary is a must-visit for every vegan traveller! You’ll hear the sanctuary’s main residents – Black Howler Monkeys – before you see them, with their unmistakable barking soundtracking every Belize adventure.

After an energising vegan breakfast, it’s time to hike one of the many majestic trails criss-crossing through the sanctuary. Learn about the plant species carpeting the park’s floor, watch Black Howler Monkeys play and chatter, and fall in love with the natural beauty of this magnificent place.

For a memory you’ll come back to time and time again, stay at the CBS into the night and watch the rainforest come alive under the stars.

4: Explore The Actun Muknal (ATM) Cave

There’s nothing quite like exploring the winding network of underground passages that form the Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Cave. As the light from outside dims and you fully immerse yourself in the intricate cave system, you’ll need to engage every one of your senses to keep moving forward!

This breathtaking cave isn’t just a geological haven – it’s a time capsule transporting you straight back to ancient Mayan civilisations. You’ll marvel at more than 1,400 time-preserved artefacts, sacrificial burial sites, and other relics in this majestic Mayan Underworld.

Adventure also awaits in ATM, where you’ll need to swim through icy pools, navigate rocky passages hands-first, and skirt around stalagmites. A sunset cocktail and hearty dish of rice and beans are now well-deserved!

5: Marvel At Bioluminescence With A Lagoon Boat Tour

No trip to Belize is complete without a night-time cruise through Anderson’s Lagoon, an otherworldly experience that’ll leave every sense tingling! Enjoy uninterrupted views of the wildlife-rich Stann Creek as you drift gently through the mangroves, and then wait for the most extraordinary show to begin.

As the sun goes down, marvel as the lagoon becomes illuminated with a glittering swirl of bioluminescence. Learn all about the microorganisms responsible as you watch them dance beneath the water’s surface, the perfect mirror of the sparkling night sky above.

Whether you’re an adrenaline seeker or cocktails on the beach kind of person, a bioluminescence boat tour of Anderson’s Lagoon is not to be missed!
