In January 2024, 9 incredible vegan ladies made history and joined me to hike  ‘El Camino De Costa Rica.’

El Camino De Costa Rica is a little-known, extremely challenging 280 km coast-to-coast hike starting in the Caribbean and finishing in the Pacific and I’m very proud to say that we were the first all-female, vegan group to have hiked it, go team Trailblazers!

I hope you find some inspiration and motivation in this ‘How She Did It’ interview series, let’s get started with Emma from England!

Q: I think it’s motivational for other women who might be reading these interviews to get an idea of who you are, would you mind sharing your age?
A: 49.5

Q: What was your motivation behind wanting to do an epic 280km hike across a whole country?
A: I’m turning 50 and I wanted to do something truly memorable to mark this

Q: Before hiking El Camino De Costa Rica, what was your hiking and backpacking experience?
A: Very very little, a walker not a hiker

Q: What kind of pre-trip training did you do for El Camino De Costa Rica?
A: I did some long walks, read up on the challenges of long hikes, not enough prep if truth be told!

Q: What were you most excited about before the hike?
A: The idea of traversing a country and seeing it in its honest form, not tourism. Meeting local people and experiencing the local culture

Q: What kind of fears or concerns did you have before the hike?
A: Spiders mostly although it was fine I only saw smallish ones, meeting strangers was a little daunting although Emma is so lovely I felt I had at least one friend before I went. I was apprehensive about ‘free weeing’ but in reality it was more funny than awkward!

Q: What was the overall highlight of the hike for you?
A: Waking up above the clouds was just mind-blowing in its beauty and wonder! Also meeting a fantastic, group of strong women who held each other up for the full trip, and discovered each other’s passions and fears.

Q: Let’s talk about packing! Did you have a favourite item? Anything you wish you hadn’t taken? Any advice for others packing for the hike?
A: Stretchy shorts and baggy thin t-shirts, a waist bag so everything is not on your back, a buff you can soak in water to cool you down. Pack the minimum in clothes, you will walk around sweaty, take lots of snacks and tape for your feet, my Brooks trainers were THE BEST and would recommend them to everyone – not one blister

Q: How was the vegan food on El Camino De Costa Rica?
A: I am the worst to feed – Vegan, Gluten, Rice and Potato intolerant – and I was fed like a Queen – all the food was amazing and the support van kept us topped up with snacks and cold drinks along the way

Q: What’s next for you when it comes to hiking and adventure travel?
A: Hopefully Guatemala in November!

Q: Any general advice or words of encouragement for others planning on doing El Camino De Costa Rica?
A: Go – it will change your life!
