Solo travel definitely has its rewards and this week Caroline is here to share her experience of her recent Self Guided Guatemala trip with Vegan Adventure Holidays, I hope you find some inspiration and motivation in this ‘How She Did It’ interview series, let’s get started!

Amazing volcano views on the overnight Acatenango volcano hike!
Q: I think it’s motivational for other women who might be reading these interviews to get an idea of who you are, would you mind sharing your age?
A: 55
Q: What was your motivation behind wanting to do a Self Guided Trip To Guatemala?
A: I was intrigued by the number of volcanoes in Guatemala and the opportunity to hike them!
Q: Before your recent Self Guided Guatemala trip, what was your general travel experience?
A: I’ve travelled often with my family and friends. Mostly staying at resorts or cruises and taking day excursions. I’ve also enjoyed long-distance cycling tours within the US.
Q: What were you most excited about before your trip?
A: I was most excited about the overnight stay on Acatelango and visiting a warm place in January.
Q: Did you have any fears or concerns before your trip?
A: I’d heard rumors that Guatemala wasn’t safe however that wasn’t at all my experience. The Guatemalan people couldn’t be more friendly and I felt safe the whole visit. I was also worried I wouldn’t make it to the top of Volcano Acatelango.
Q: What was the overall highlight for you during your stay in Guatemala?
A: Getting to the top of Acatelango was the highlight. It was a huge personal achievement for me.
Q: Let’s talk about packing! Did you have a favourite item? Anything you wish you hadn’t taken? Any advice for others packing for the hike?
A: My favourite item was my Merril hiking boots I bought on Prime Day two months before the trip. I made sure I broke them in and they protected my feet and ankles. I wish I had brought more ibuprofen and meds for cold relief. I came down with a virus and wasn’t prepared.
Q: How was the vegan food in Guatemala?
A: Extremely awesome. Especially in Antigua there are vegan restaurants and many other places that have vegan options. You won’t go hungry.
Q: Tell us about your experience of the overnight Acatenango volcano summit hike, how was it?
A: The hike itself was brutal, but so worth the effort . I definitely struggled even having been training at the gym for months prior. But the views were so amazing like nothing I’d ever seen before. The people and tour guides I met were super supportive and helpful. The base camp was very nice and the food was very good. We did a fun sunset tour which was also beautiful. I slept very well in my private hut. Dress warm! It gets cold up there.
Q: Any general advice or words of encouragement for others planning on doing a self-guided trip to Guatemala?
A: Do it! Even if you go alone you won’t feel alone. Guatemala was such a wonderful surprise. It was so much more than I expected. You’ll be amazed at what you learn not only about Guatemala but about yourself. My trip was life-changing. It’s inspired me to consider more adventures in Central America.
