Today you’ll be peddling!
We start out down a steep country road traversing the high plateau above Lake Atitlán. This mostly downhill ride takes you through several small villages and towns before rounding a final ridgeline and joining the road up from the Pacific coast bound for Panajachel.
At the first vista overlooking Lake Atitlán, your guide will stop and prepare a picnic lunch and orientate you to the lakeside towns and geographic features of Lake Atitlán. After lunch, we’ll continue breezing down the quick and windy road to the lakeside town of Panajachel. From here, we will catch a boat to Jaibalito to a beautiful cliffside hotel where you’ll be spending the night.
Your day will start with a delicious vegan breakfast and freshly roasted Guatemalan coffee before getting ready for our paddle and lakeside hike adventures. Swimsuits on, sunscreen applied and it’s tike to meet down at the dock to board our kayaks for the north-shore paddle.
We paddle westward 1½-2 hours past small towns and villages perched high on the steep sides of sheer ridges that rise right out of the waters of Lake Atitlán. After passing the villages of Jaibalito and Tzununá we cruise into the bay of San Marcos la Laguna and trade our kayaks for our daypacks and hiking gear.
Climbing out of town, we head back along the ridge that we paddled by earlier, with spectacular volcanic views offered up by the surrounding peaks of Volcanoes San Pedro, Tolimán, and Atitlán. After 1.5hrs of hiking, we roll back into Casa del Mundo where lunch is waiting. Later we’ll and head back to Antigua where we arrive early evening.

Get your workboots on and roll up your sleeves because you’re about to get hands on with the animals!
Stray dog populations continue to be an issue in many areas of the world, Guatemala included. Close to Antigua there are various great projects that involve spay or neuter clinics, free vaccination clinics, rescue and rehabilitation of street dogs, cats and other aniamals.
Today’s volunteer efforts might range from helping walk the dogs, assisting at one of the clinics, or simply showing some love to abandoned and abused dogs, animals come in all shapes and sizes, yet they all somehow manage to steal our hearts in one way or another!
Time to leave and head home after an amazing week but this is not the end of your journey, there’s so much more to see in Guatemala that you might be back again or maybe you’ll join a group adventure in Mexico or Belize!
