The Black Sheep Retreat is a non-profit Animal Sanctuary located just outside Cancun, sitting on 7 acres of jungle. Founded by Mandy Vara after coming to Mexico to work as a dive instructor, her goal is to rescue as many animals as possible while providing a high-quality standard of animal care.
Mandy says…
With only eight farm animal sanctuaries in the entire country of Mexico, we aim to give a much-needed home to an array of species rescued from slaughter or abusive and exploitative situations. We also aim to give a peaceful space for people to come and enjoy time in nature, surrounded by safe and happy animals, something different than what we experience in our everyday world.
After spending some time with the animals, you’ll get to experience a delicious vegan lunch in the jungle!
Tuesday, April 26
This morning, you’ll get to experience the Caribbean Sea the best way possible; floating on a paddleboard toward the rising sun! If you have never done standup paddleboarding before, not to worry because the group will receive a basic intro to standup paddleboarding from the local guide that takes about 10 minutes. It’s pretty easy to learn the basics. After that our guide will make sure you enter the water safely and have an amazing time.
A well-deserved post-paddle vegan breakfast will be waiting when you finish.
Wednesday, April 27
Imagine an ancient walled city perched on the edge of a cliff overlooking the Caribbean ocean!
This is in fact an accurate description of the archeological site of Tulum which is just 60km south of Playa Del Carmen and definitely one of Mexico’s highlights.Tulum was one of the last cities built by the Maya, it was at it’s most powerful between the 13th and 15th centuries but is thought to have been inhabited as early as 564.
Today is action packed with a private guided tour of the impressive Tulum archeological site followed by a beautiful vegan brunch and then off to cool down in some local cenotes.
A cenote is a natural sinkhole resulting from the collapse of limestone bedrock that exposes groundwater, these natural swimming holes were sacred to the mayans, the Yucutan peninsula is packed with cenotes and you’re going to experience one today!
Thursday, April 28
Are you ready for some action? Today you’ll be snorkeling in Cenotes, ziplining through the jungle and kayaking in the mangroves before enjoying a vegan friendly mayan lunch!
Located in the heart of the Riviera Maya, you’ll visit a village that will offer you a glimpse into the Maya culture. This village is part of an ecotourism project where culture and adventure are perfectly combined thanks to the care of a mayan community.
You’ll enjoy 4 amazing but different cenotes, where you can do different activities. During the tour of the park’s trails, you will have the opportunity to appreciate a great variety of wildlife, such as: birds of different species, insects, turtles, cenote fish, iguanas and monkeys.

Loved every minute of it. Emma is the perfect tour leader with insider knowledge of all the best vegan spots.
I had an amazing holiday eco-culture adventure trip. Emma is one of the best tour leaders out there – I will be recommending your tours and I will also be taking another in the future – Thank you for a wonderful journey! \” \”I was so pleased with the trip. Our guide and drivers were outstanding : knowledgeable, friendly, safety-conscious, and had great sense of humor. Good vacation and good company for sure.
Amazing! We started in Playa Del Carmen and traveled throughout the area to animal sanctuaries, zip lined, snorkeled in cenotes, paddle boarded at the beach, ate at amazing vegan restaurants, and spent New Year\’s Eve at a vegan friendly a luxury resort. A perfect way to spend the holidays and meet new friends! This was my second trip with Vegan Adventure Holidays, and I\’m looking forward to a third.
This was my first solo travel and I couldn\’t have asked for a better experience. It was a perfect balance of structured activities and free time, our hotel was in a great location, the food was absolutely amazing, we had a great dynamic within the group, and Playa del Carmen is absolutely beautiful. We experienced two very different animal sanctuaries – both incredible with amazing people; and visited very different cenotes – a wild, untouched one, a beautiful swimming hole, and then a series of fun ones with rope swings and ziplining; and SUP in the ocean was very challenging (which I was so glad for) and provoked a lot of laughter. Our finale at House of Aia was indescribable – such beauty, friendliness, and a spiritual essence. This trip was exactly what I was looking for and needed!
Emma was an amazing host, and I would (and will!) absolutely recommend her trips to anyone and everyone!
