If you’re looking for an adventure that combines natural beauty, exhilarating hiking, vegan cuisine and Antigua city exploring , Vegan Adventure Holidays’ – Guatemala trip is for you. I highly recommend adding on a trek to the Acatenango Volcano which was challenging but gave us a close-up view of the active and majestic Fuego Volcano. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or someone simply looking to explore more of Guatemala, this tour is an excellent choice that I wholeheartedly recommend!

This was my second trip with Vegan Adventure Holidays, and it was wonderful. As a vegan traveling in a country where I don’t speak the language, it meant so much to have delicious, fully vegan food I could trust every step of the way. I loved the diverse group of women, the relaxed hiking pace, and the chance to explore areas I wouldn’t be able to on my own. Highlights included the Antigua Valley hike, an unforgettable coffee tour with local farmers, trekking to Lake Atitlán with stunning volcano views, playing soccer with local kids, and enjoying the incredible meals our guide, Didi, cooked right on the trail. I highly recommend this trip for anyone seeking meaningful adventure, culture, and reliable vegan meals.

Where do i begin? I just completed my first adventure with Vegan Adventure Holidays and WOW!! A friend and I did the 10 day Guatemala trek. I first heard about this company while listening to Emma (owner) describing the Costa Rica trip on “Trails Worth Hiking” podcast. I then ventured on to her website and became excited with the various opportunities. I’m an avid hiker, but not a spring chicken, so I consider treks carefully. I emailed Emma and through our correspondence, chose this trek. Emma is quick to respond and truly works with you to make good recommendations. She is truly a detail gal who doesn’t miss a thing regarding the trip or the people. This trek had some serious climbs ( Emma labels them “rude”), but unbelievable views–hiking amidst the volcanoes is incredible. The guide goes at a pace that meets the needs of the group and even though I was the slowest hiker, I never felt like I was a burden. The group was very accepting and strong hikers. Emma made accommodations for myself when we agreed a section might be too challenging.
The food at all meals was a 10 and even if you are not vegan, you would love it. We were NEVER hungry! When not camping, but going into restaurants, we preordered and had meals waiting for us which is appreciated when you are tired from hiking all day. We also had some “field trips”, (coffee planation, kayaking on Atitlan Lake ) that enabled us to get to know
and love the Mayan people. We had extra days and Emma made excellent suggestions on what activities to do. (cooking class, chocolate class, cultural tour, etc.) . Emma’s presence during the hikes and meals makes you smile. She is naturally a people person who is an excellent listener and great lady. She loves the communities and they love her.
This trek is listed as intermediate and it is definitely intermediate to difficult in parts due to the climbs with few switchbacks. The camping and hotel accommodations were very good.
I’m already looking at another trip with Vegan Adventure Holidays I would give Emma a ten !!!! DON’T HESITATE TO BOOK A TRIP WITH VEGAN ADVENTURE HOLIDAYS!

The Guatemala trek was the perfect combination of hiking, culture, food, and bonding with like-minded vegan adventurers. The trip schedule was planned with balance, challenge, and down-time, and Emma’s commitment to community building and vegan values inspired confidence and purpose along the way. I have already signed up for another Vegan Adventure Holiday and would absolutely recommend this to friends and family.

Emma took all of the difficult parts about traveling to a new place (finding vegan food, coordinating transportation and accommodations etc.) and did them for us seamlessly – to allow everyone to just relax and enjoy the new experience. She was patient and kind with everyone – and made a real effort to connect with each person on the trip. While also juggling all the logistics of managing a group that size. I had a wonderful experience and highly recommend Vegan Adventure Holidays.

Emma is a wonderful host and very welcoming. She was well organized and detailed throughout the trip. Due to an injury that kept me from the planned itinerary she connected me with transportation and accommodations thanks to her connections and knowledge of Guatemala. She was very supportive and is a lovely person to spend time with. I would recommend her trips in a heartbeat.

Amazing. I have done smaller vegan treks in Peru, but the Guatemala Trek was a great way to jump into a longer journey. The daily treks were mixed with down time in being able to enjoy Antigua and the surrounding area. Also, there were many opportunities provided in supporting the local economy via a coffee farm tour (a must), steam bath, etc. I look forward to the next adventure with Vegan Adventure Holidays – Great job Emma.

After you’ve settled into the joining hotel in Guatemala’s former capital city La Antigua, you’ll have time to explore. Antigua is a UNESCO world heritage site and as you’re strolling around town, you’ll notice it sits in a valley, the Panchoy valley which is known as being the cultural center of Guatemala. With no end of ancient churches, appealing parks conveniently placed coffee shops and flanked by volcanoes, your adventure starts now! Day 2: Antigua Valley Hike

Hiking: 8 km / 5 m | Ascent: 450m

Highlights: Fantastic valley views

This morning we’ll set off on a moderate hike that takes us out of the Antigua Valley, around the ridgeline, through forest, avocado and coffee plantations.

The day begins with a steep climb that takes us out of the valley to the top of a nearby ridge, where later, hidden away on the mountainside we’ll have a picnic lunch and enjoy the views!

We will return to our hotel in Antigua later in the afternoon where you’ll have time to relax before another group dinner at one of Antigua’s best vegan restaurants.

Five people wearing hiking gear stand on a narrow forest trail surrounded by greenery, smiling at the camera on a sunny day.

Day 3: Community Coffee Farm Experience

Today we step into everyday Guatemalan life with a visit to a locally run, community-owned coffee farm. where families grow, harvest and roast their coffee and where your visit directly supports community tourism. You’ll walk through the coffee plants, learn how bright red cherries become the beans in your cup, and hear honest stories about farming life in rural Guatemala.

It’s relaxed, welcoming and eye-opening, a chance to connect beyond the trail, ask real questions, and understand the culture that shapes this landscape. Travel feels different when your presence genuinely benefits the people who live here, and that’s exactly the kind of adventure we believe in.

Day 4: Antigua To Atitlan Trek

Hiking:9.2 m / 14.8  km | Ascent: 1015 m / 3321 ft

Highlights: Hiking through the beautifully rugged Guatemala highlands

Today we begin 3 full days of hiking across the culturally rich regions connecting Antigua and Lake Atitlan, along the way we’ll walk through cloud forest canopy and coffee fincas, be immersed in the sights and sounds of Guatemala’s living Mayan culture and communities, and be amazed at the kindness and warmth of its people.

Our first few hours of trekking takes us up as we climb into a protected area before beginning a long descent through forest and agricultural fields into the La Vega River valley, below.

Following lunch, we cross a hanging foot bridge over the river (allowing you to embrace your inner Indiana Jones!) before a challenging yet spectacular afternoon 600 m climb up through pine forest and local coffee farms to arrive at our Fuego Camp by late-afternoon.

Five hikers pose on a mountain trail with trekking poles, lush greenery around them, and a scenic valley view in the background.

Day 5: Hike from Pachut to Chuinimachica

Hiking: 8 m / 12 km | Ascent: 644 m / 2216 ft

Highlights: Panoramic volcano views

Today you will be immersed in the finest natural scenery that Guatemala has to offer. A morning push takes us to the highest point of the trek, just over 2,755m. Then we follow a pristine ridgeline with panoramic views of six volcanoes and cloud forest that reveals unique plants and birds.

Along the way, you will have the opportunity to see local farmers tending their terraced fields and learn about traditional agricultural practices. A long, gradual descent leads us to our trail lunch location (and a short siesta) before we finish the day by walking into Agua Camp, named in honor of Lake Atitlán, which can be seen in the distance below.

After relaxing a bit, we venture into the local Mayan community of Chuinimachica to setup camp for the night.

Three hikers stand on a mountain trail overlooking a blue lake, distant volcanoes, and clear sky, with two birds flying nearby and trees framing the scene.

Day 6: Hike Into Lake Atitlan

Hiking: 10 m / 16 km | Ascent: 692 m Descent: 932 m

Highlights: Reaching Lake Atitlan

The final day of our trek begins with a descent into the La Madre Vieja River valley that weaves through a patchwork of traditional agricultural fields and small villages. Once in the valley, we visit a picturesque coffee finca to learn about the planting, harvesting and processing of small-batch speciality coffee (and of course, sample some as well).

Following the coffee tour, we cross the river on another hanging footbridge before a short ascent that takes us up to the rim of Lake Atitlán and expansive views of the water below and three massive
volcanoes that surround it.

From there, a final descent through terraced fields of flowers and vegetables takes us to the lakeside village of San Antonio Palopó to conclude the trek. Congratulations…we made it!

Seven hikers with backpacks and walking sticks pose together on a trail with mountains and blue sky in the background.

Day 7: Free Day Lake Atitlan

After a few big hiking days, today is yours to enjoy at the pace you choose on the shores of Lake Atitlán.

You might glide out onto the water in a kayak, paddling across the deep blue lake with volcanoes rising dramatically around you — peaceful, powerful, and a little bit epic! Or you could visit a nearby nature reserve, wandering through shaded trails, spotting wildlife and soaking up those slower moments that make adventure feel balanced. Swim, explore a lakeside village, or just sit back and enjoy coffee and a view, the choice is yours.

Day 8 – Departures or Optional Volcano Summit Hike

Today marks the end of our main Guatemala adventure, but not the end of the fun and community!  After breakfast by the lake, there will be a transfer to the airport for onward travel, heading home full of memories, new friendships and very strong legs… or travel back to Antigua to begin the optional Acatenango Volcano hike add-on.

Whether you’re catching a flight or gearing up to summit one of the most spectacular volcanoes on Earth, today is a heartfelt farewell to Lake Atitlán and a celebration of everything you’ve just experienced from mountain trails and Mayan culture to epic views and unforgettable vegan food.

Getting to Guatemala is easy and stress-free. You’ll fly into Guatemala City International Airport (GUA), where your driver will be waiting to meet you to take you straight to Antigua in a private, included transfer.

The drive takes around an hour and a half and winds through mountain scenery before delivering you into Antigua’s colourful cobblestone streets, the perfect soft landing after your travels.

From the moment you arrive, everything is taken care of, so you can relax, settle in, and start soaking up the adventure ahead.

This Guatemala adventure is rated intermediate, making it perfect for hikers who are active, enjoy being on their feet and are ready for a rewarding challenge.

You’ll be hiking on varied terrain, from forest trails and mountain paths to rural tracks between villages, with plenty of ups and downs to keep things interesting. Much of the route is at higher altitudes of above 2000 mas, which adds an extra layer of challenge as the air is thinner and the views are bigger, but the pace is steady and supportive, with plenty of breaks to enjoy the scenery.

If you’re comfortable hiking for 5+ hours a day and love the feeling of earning your views, you’ll thrive on this trip.

The weather on this Guatemala trip is wonderfully varied, thanks to the changing altitudes we hike through!

You can expect daytime typically range from a pleasant 18–24°C (64–75°F) in the higher mountains to a warmer 20–28°C (68–82°F) as we descend into lower valleys and towns.

Evenings, especially at camp, can be cool and crisp, so layers are essential, think light hiking clothes for the day and warm fleeces for those cosy nights under the stars. It’s all part of the mountain magic and a very good excuse to enjoy a hot cup by the fire!

The cost of this trip is US$2900 per person on a shared accommodation basis.

There is limited private room availability, you will receive more information after booking.

No! All you have to carry is a day bag, your main luggage will be transported each day.

A reasonable base level of fitness is required, comfortably being able to hike 8-10 miles for example is a good indicator of required base level fitness.

Guatemala’s highlands around Antigua enjoy a spring-like climate for much of the year, thanks to the elevation (Antigua sits at around 1,500 m / 5,000 ft). Daytime temperatures typically range between 70–80°F (21–27°C), with cooler mornings and evenings dropping to 50–60°F (10–16°C).

As you climb higher into the mountains, up to 3,000 m (9,800 ft) temperatures become noticeably cooler, often sitting between 55–65°F (13–18°C) during the day and dipping as low as 40–50°F (5–10°C) at night.

Absolutely! Around 60% of Vegan Adventure Holidays guests are single travellers, everybody is welcome.

Yes! It’s recommended to get a policy that covers trip and flight cancellations and should include adequate protection for overseas medical treatment, and evacuation/repatriation. Safetywing and World Nomad have good policies.

Tips for the local guide are not included in the trip cost. These are entirely at your discretion but there is an expectation to tip for good service. You will receive a full tipping breakdown after booking, the approximate tipping costs for this trip are around US$150.

Email Emma at hello@veganadventureholidays and I’ll answer your questions and queries personally.
